‘Most people find that ants are quite interesting if you have a story for them.’

                            -Walter Tschinkel, Myrmecologist

‘Through A Glass, Darkly’ explores the stories that humans have projected onto ants and their society. It aims to take a step back from the human lens that we perceive ants through and question the way that we understand their social structure and actions by drawing parallels with ourselves.

The creation of these stories is pervasive through myrmecological history, both scientific and local, as a way to rationalise and understand ants by comparing them to ourselves.

However, these stories often say far more about human ideologies and our society than they ever do about the ants.

Drawing similar parallels in a less conventional way, I aim to create unsettling moments and encourage people to acknowledge the drawbacks of these comparisons. I have created several Hollywood-esque ant vignettes on tiny sets, and invite the viewer to consider how easily we superimpose our lives and experiences onto the ants’.
